I think the beauty industry has confused us a little. Somewhere along the way, we started acting like soft glam and full glam are two completely different worlds, and honestly? They are not.

"How much is it for soft glam makeup?"

"How much is it for full glam makeup?"

I get asked this all the time.

For the longest time, these two makeup styles have confused people. Even in the beauty industry, there has always been this ongoing debate around soft glam and full glam makeup. Some people think soft glam means less makeup, while full glam means more makeup. Some people think soft glam should be cheaper and full glam should cost more.

In most cases when clients enquire they will send me a picture and say, "I want soft glam," and I'm looking at the picture thinking, "...this is actually full glam." or they will send me a picture saying, "I want full glam," and it's actually soft glam. A lot of people identify the look based on the colours being used instead of the actual technique behind it, and as a makeup artist I can understand why.

I cannot even count how many times a client has sat in my chair, shown me a picture and confidently said, 'I want soft glam,' while I'm sitting there thinking, 'Ma'am... this is a full glam smoky eye.

Soft Glam vs Full Glam: What Is The Difference?

Let's settle this.

Colours

When it comes to soft glam makeup, the colours are usually more neutral and softer — think browns, nudes, warm tones and shades that blend naturally into the skin. With full glam makeup, the colours are usually stronger, brighter or more dramatic. Think smokey eyes, deeper shades, glitter, stronger contrast or bolder colours that are meant to stand out.

Blending

With soft glam, the blending is usually softer and more diffused because the goal is to make everything melt into the skin naturally. With full glam, the blending can sometimes be more defined because certain features are intentionally meant to stand out.

Contouring

Soft glam contouring is usually blended more seamlessly into the face so that it looks softer and more natural. Full glam contouring is usually more sculpted and more visible because the goal is to create stronger definition.

Lips

Soft glam makeup usually leans toward nude lips, browns, softer pinks and natural tones. Full glam makeup tends to play more with stronger colours, ombre lips or shades that become more of a statement.

The Biggest Misconceptions About Soft Glam and Full Glam

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is thinking soft glam means less work, people see a softer look and automatically assume it took less effort. But sometimes soft glam can take even more time - let me explain.

If someone wants a very natural-looking eye, I might have to blend multiple eyeshadow shades together so perfectly that you can't even tell where one shade starts and where another one ends, everything needs to melt together seamlessly. Then on the other side, people think full glam automatically takes longer because it looks more dramatic. Sometimes yes, but not always. Sometimes a stronger eye look actually takes less blending because the colours are meant to stand out. Sometimes a bold lip takes less work than trying to create the perfect nude lip that looks effortless.

So the whole idea of:

"Soft glam = easier" and "Full glam = harder" ... isn't always true.

No. The longevity usually depends more on skin prep, products used and application technique.

Can I decide on the day?

Yes, although bringing reference pictures helps a lot.

This is another thing people ask all the time: "Which one should I choose?"

The truth is there isn't really a right or wrong option, it's about personal preference.

Whether you're booking bridal makeup in Johannesburg, wedding makeup, corporate makeup, matric dance makeup, photoshoot makeup, event makeup, or graduation makeup, one of the biggest questions people ask is which style works best.

For bridal makeup and corporate makeup, most people usually lean more toward soft glam because you still want to look like yourself. You want timeless pictures, softer features and something that feels polished without feeling too heavy. But that doesn't mean brides cannot wear full glam. Some brides absolutely love stronger eyes, more contour and a more dramatic look.

For things like music video makeup, photoshoots and evening events, people sometimes go a little stronger because makeup naturally loses intensity on camera and under lighting. At the end of the day, it really comes down to who you are and what makes you feel beautiful. Some people feel like themselves in soft glam and some people feel like themselves in full glam.

Because makeup can look amazing in person and completely different once cameras and flash get involved and many people are not aware of this.

Sometimes people think adding more powder, more highlight or more product automatically makes makeup look better, but too much product can actually do the opposite.

You've probably seen pictures where somebody looks beautiful in real life and then suddenly the flash hits and their face looks lighter than their neck or their under-eye area is too bright and sometimes a little white. That usually comes down to product placement, blending and balance. Makeup isn't really about adding more and more.

It's about knowing where and how much.

Product Usage: Is Less Product Used In Soft Glam?

This one is probably one of the biggest myths.

People think soft glam uses fewer products and full glam uses more products.

Most of the time, that isn't true. The products don't suddenly disappear because someone wants softer colours, it's just different colours being used. The only real difference is usually how those products are being used and how visible they are at the end.

That's why somebody can sit in my chair asking for soft glam and another person can sit down asking for full glam, and I can still end up using almost the same amount of product for both looks.

And please, bring reference pictures. Pictures help so much. Show us what you love and even what you don't. Because someone who wears makeup often might be completely comfortable with a stronger, more dramatic look. But someone getting their makeup professionally done for the first time may need something softer and easier to ease into. The makeup artist also needs to understand who you are.
